Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
